Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is an Academic Consultant? Unlike a tutor who focuses on a specific subject (like Algebra or Biology), an Academic Consultant focuses on the student as a whole. I help students build the systems they need to succeed across all subjects—improving their organization, time management, and ability to navigate the school system itself.
How is this different from School Counseling or Therapy? While my bachelor's degree is in Psychology, I do not provide clinical mental health counseling or therapy. Our sessions are focused on behavioral habits, academic routines, and school-based performance. If a student is facing a clinical mental health crisis, I can refer you to licensed therapists who specialize in those areas.
Do you help with college applications and essays? I am not a college admissions consultant. My goal is to help your student build the academic foundation, transcript, and independence that will make them a strong candidate when it is time to apply. While I can help with high-school course selection and dual enrollment strategy, I do not manage the college application process itself.
What exactly is the difference between a tutor and an Academic Consultant?
While a tutor focuses on a specific subject (like Algebra or Biology), an Academic Consultant focuses on the student. We specialize in Executive Function—the "how" of learning. We build the systems of organization, time management, and strategic planning that allow a student to succeed across all subjects and into their collegiate career.
How much involvement is required from the parents?
Our goal is to de-escalate the "homework battle" at home. While we maintain open lines of communication with parents regarding progress, our primary work is directly with the student to foster independence. We act as the external "accountability partner" so that you can return to your role as a supportive parent rather than a taskmaster.
At what age should a student begin working with Anchor Point?
While we support students throughout their middle and high school years, the "Gold Standard" for starting strategic planning is the sophomore year of high school. This allows us to build a robust academic profile and executive habits long before the high-pressure environment of senior year applications begins.
Is the consulting done in-person or virtually?
To accommodate the demanding schedules of modern students, we offer virtual and hybrid consulting sessions. This allows for consistent check-ins regardless of sports schedules or travel, ensuring that the "Anchor" of support is always available. Our face to face meetings can take place at a school, a library and/or Starbucks.
How do we get started?
Every partnership begins with a Strategic Consultation. This is a brief, focused conversation where we evaluate your student’s current trajectory and determine which of our tiers—Foundation, Navigator, or Summit—best aligns with your family’s goals.
Why is an "outside" advocate necessary if my child has a school counselor? School counselors are incredible resources, but they often manage hundreds of students at once. With 33 years in education, I have the time and expertise to look deeply at your student’s specific transcript, identify missed opportunities, and help you advocate for your child’s needs within the system effectively.
How long does it take to see results? Academic planning can provide immediate clarity, but Executive Function coaching (habits and routines) is like a muscle—it takes time to build. Most families can see a shift in the student’s confidence and organization within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent sessions.
What is your cancellation policy? To respect the time dedicated to your student’s success, I require 24-hour notice for cancellations. Sessions canceled with less than 24 hours' notice will be billed at the full rate.
